Keeping Your Baby Safe on the Road

Smiling woman in a car looks at a baby in a car seat. The baby is wrapped in a blue blanket. Sunlight filters through the windows.

Bringing your baby home for the first time is one of the most exciting moments for new parents. However, ensuring proper car seat safety is crucial to protecting your little one on every ride. A car seat that is incorrectly installed or used can pose significant risks, so understanding the do’s and don’ts is essential for your baby’s safety.

Car Seat Safety Do’s

✔️ Choose the Right Car Seat – Your baby should always ride in a rear-facing car seat that meets current safety standards. Infant car seats or convertible seats designed for newborns are the safest options.

✔️ Install It Correctly – Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use either the LATCH system or seatbelt, never both. If you’re unsure, visit a certified car seat technician for a safety check.

✔️ Position the Chest Clip Correctly – The chest clip should always be at armpit level, snug against the baby’s chest.

✔️ Use the Pinch Test – Straps should be tight enough that you cannot pinch any slack at your baby’s shoulders.

✔️ Keep Baby Rear-Facing as Long as Possible – The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping children rear-facing until at least age 2, or until they reach the height and weight limit for their seat.

✔️ Dress Baby Lightly – Bulky coats, puffy jackets, or thick blankets can prevent harness straps from fitting securely. Dress your baby in thin layers and use a car seat cover or a blanket placed over them (never behind or under the straps).

Car Seat Safety Don’ts

Don’t Rush the Next Stage – Avoid switching to forward-facing too soon. Rear-facing offers the best protection for your baby’s head, neck, and spine in the event of an accident.

Don’t Use Aftermarket Accessories – Any head supports, strap covers, or cushions that didn’t come with your car seat may interfere with safety. Stick to manufacturer-approved products.

Don’t Place Baby in a Used or Expired Car Seat – Car seats expire (typically after 6-10 years) and may not meet current safety regulations. Avoid secondhand car seats unless you know their full history.

Don’t Use Car Seats for Sleep – Car seats are designed for travel, not long-term sleep. Once you arrive at your destination, transfer your baby to a safe flat sleep surface.

Don’t Leave Loose Items in the Car – In a crash, unsecured objects (even a water bottle or toy) can become dangerous projectiles.
